THE DESIGN. The Living-Learning Center quad is a significant space on the University of Oregon campus. It serves as a gathering place for students, faculty, and visitors, and is an especially prominent location for nearby residents. It currently exists as a large open space between the north and south buildings of the Living–Learning Center. The proposed design intervention addresses the lack of human scaled space in the quad by dividing the existing area into smaller outdoor rooms. This is accomplished specifically through a combination of tiered seat walls and accompanying rows of trees. These design elements form edges within the quad, reducing its relative size, and creating enclosed spaces that promote activity hubs.
